Kaiya Shinbashi has donated 240 hours to national and local charities during her time with National Charity League.

Service to others is what inspires Kaiya Shinbashi. The recent Discovery Canyon Campus High School graduate has traveled extensively and feels amazed by the resilience she has witnessed during shared meals with strangers.

"Seeing the way others live has been the cornerstone for my love of service. I learned that little acts of kindness can change a person's life," she explains. Indeed, Kaiya has donated 240 hours to national and local charities during her time with National Charity League Inc. (NCL), a mother-daughter organization that fosters philanthropy, leadership, and cultural experiences. Kaiya and her mom, Cristen, have spent six years volunteering together in NCL. "The best thing in my experience is getting to spend time with my mom, as we both make an impact in our community," Kaiya says.

Kaiya's favorite place to volunteer is Children's Hospital. She has also taken photographs for Gigi's Playhouse, a group that supports people with Down syndrome and their families. Ushering for plays at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center is another highlight.

Her dedication earned Kaiya NCL's Senior Service award, for giving the most hours of anyone in the chapter. She also was president of her high school's National Honor Society, a club that requires top grades and a commitment to volunteering.

Kaiya's other passions include soccer and the business club DECA. She says playing soccer on her club and high school teams "has been a huge influence on my life, because it taught me about resilience, leadership and the importance of teamwork."

Meantime, competing in DECA competitions at the state and national level has taught her valuable communication and presentation skills, boosting her confidence. "I am proud of how much I have grown as a person and as a contributor to our community," she says.

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.

This fall, Kaiya heads to Southern Methodist University in Texas to major in business. Continuing to volunteer is a priority. Her most important lesson from high school?

"Being true to yourself and your values is the best thing you can do." Kaiya's values, including her compassion and heart for service, ensure she'll continue making a difference in the world around her.
